Best camera smartphones, 2020 and 2021 were important years for the smartphone camera industry. In the coming years, vendors will use sophisticated hardware to increase resolution and introduce new optical systems with greater zoom.
Although these smartphones reviewed here have mostly been on the market awhile, it’s crucially important to re-test them after each update to gauge how well vendors are responding to the latest trends.

1. The first best camera smartphone Google Pixel 5
The Google Pixel 5, like the iPhone, is the oldest phone on the list by a year. The hardware itself hasn’t changed since last year’s Pixel 4, but Google has added an ultra-wide-angle lens. It’s a bit weird that Google uses a 16.2MP UWA sensor for RAW shots, however, the resolution is only available when shooting in RAW.
Other images are shot with a 12.2MP sensor. My main gripe with Pixel 5 is that the main camera sensor is a 1.4µm 12.2MP unit with no extra features.
In good light conditions, the Pixel 5 is able to maintain more shadow details instills, improving dynamic range over its predecessors with new software processing. It does all of that with its newer HDR+ algorithm.
The only phone in the lineup that doesn’t have a telephoto lens and uses the main sensor for multi-frame upscaling.
2. Second best camera smartphone is OnePlus 9 Pro
The OnePlus 9 Pro features a new wide-angle camera, which uses a 50.3-megapixel image sensor to take 12.6-megapixel photos (due to binning), and has large 1.0µmnative pixels and 2.0µm binned pixels.
This results in a pretty big-sized sensor—a lot bigger than other typical smartphone cameras. The module also features an in-mold spacer (ISM) lens, which allows for image correction without degrading the image quality like what is typically seen in other devices.
The primary camera on camera uses a new 48-megapixel sensor that captures photos with 1.22µm sized pixels and that’s binned down to 12 megapixels, which means there are now 2.24µm pixels. With a 108 megapixel sensor, the pixel density is higher than most other smartphone cameras. At 21 arc seconds, we can tell if an image is in focus or not, even though the smartphone has a 24.57 mm focal length.

Unlike the S21, which features an ultra-wide-angle lens, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra uses a different sensor manufacturer and is a few pixels smaller, but otherwise, it remains quite similar to its predecessor.
The S21 Ultra has a 12-megapixel camera sensor from Samsungs new generation of point-and-shoot sensors. It is expected to improve on the low-light performance of last year’s models.
